DSIP (Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide) is a nonapeptide (nine amino acids: Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu) originally isolated from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during electrically induced slow-wave sleep. Its name reflects this original observation: injection of the isolated compound was associated with delta-wave (slow-wave) EEG activity in early research models.
Despite decades of investigation, DSIP's exact receptor and molecular mechanism remain incompletely characterized, making it a distinctive research subject. Some research has proposed interaction with components of the MAPK signaling cascade, with structural homology to the glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper (GILZ) protein, alongside reported effects on neurotransmitter systems involved in stress regulation. DSIP is studied in laboratory settings primarily in the context of sleep architecture, stress response, and neuroprotective research models.
