Epithalon (also spelled Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed as a purified analog of epithalamin, a peptide fraction originally extracted from bovine pineal gland tissue. It is one of the most extensively studied compounds in telomere biology research, with research dating back to Soviet-era and continuing Russian biogerontology programs.
Epithalon's primary mechanism of interest is its reported ability to upregulate hTERT (telomerase reverse transcriptase) gene expression, leading to telomerase activation and telomere elongation in human cell cultures, one of the few documented cases of a short synthetic peptide influencing this pathway through what appears to be a transcriptional regulation mechanism. A second, related research domain concerns Epithalon's effects on pineal gland function, including its reported influence on melatonin synthesis and circadian rhythm regulation in aging models.
