LL-37 is a 37-amino-acid amphipathic alpha-helical peptide and the only cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide found in humans. It is generated through proteolytic cleavage of its 18-kDa precursor protein, hCAP18, and is naturally produced by neutrophils, macrophages, and epithelial cells as part of the innate immune defense system.
LL-37's research relevance stems from a dual mechanism distinct from receptor-mediated peptides elsewhere in our catalog. Its primary antimicrobial action occurs through direct, physical disruption of microbial cell membranes, an amphipathic structure that inserts into and destabilizes bacterial lipid membranes rather than acting through a specific binding target. Independently of this membrane-disrupting activity, LL-37 also functions as an immune modulator, interacting with cell-surface receptors such as FPRL-1 to influence neutrophil and monocyte chemotaxis, modulate inflammatory cytokine release, and contribute to wound-healing processes through effects on cell proliferation and migration.
