Snap-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) is a synthetic eight-amino-acid peptide developed as an extension of the earlier compound Argireline, designed to target the SNARE complex, the molecular machinery responsible for neurotransmitter vesicle fusion at the neuromuscular junction.
Snap-8 mimics a fragment of SNAP-25, one of the three core proteins (alongside syntaxin and VAMP/synaptobrevin) that assemble into the SNARE complex to enable acetylcholine release. By competitively occupying SNAP-25's binding position within this complex, Snap-8 reduces the proportion of fully assembled SNARE complexes per neural signal, attenuating, rather than blocking, acetylcholine-mediated vesicle fusion. This produces a partial, reversible, dose-dependent reduction in neurotransmitter release. The distinction is mechanistically important relative to Botulinum Toxin, also available in our catalog: Botulinum Toxin acts enzymatically, cleaving SNAP-25 to produce near-complete and longer-lasting blockade, while Snap-8's competitive, non-enzymatic mechanism is reversible once the peptide is no longer present.
